chinese new year abroad

i never thought i’d say this, but i actually miss chinese new year..
not that i ever liked the heat during cny, always the hottest time of the year red things everywhere and all..

this is actually my first time being abroad during cny
and not only am i not in an asian country, i’m all the way in Africa
entirely different continent!

cny here is….
what cny?! hahaha
apparently there WAS a china town but it disappeared..
so much for trying to experience cny in a different context..

darn no chilled oranges, no dry meat, no angpow, no catching up with friends, no irritating daddy, ma and ning and having good seafood..

maybe after cny i’ll go hunt for some good chinese food
doubt there’s any thou

oh well, enjoy the weather peeps and eat more for me!

the last day of ’08

oh my freaking gawd~!
this year flew by in mere seconds!
what the hell happened to long ass days and never ending months??

remember when we were kids and school was never ending and the year seems to stretch for ever!
and now? the days ski by and the year closes at barely a wink of the eye!

we remember more the big events in our lives
events happen as if they were a year or two ago
people come and go and stay and stab and scratch and screw
but its all to make us ever more tougher and grateful

so many things have happened in the past year
some i can remember, some i can vaguely remember
but no matter how terrible my memory is, i’m grateful for all thats happened.. 

anyhow, i’d like to wish all my friends, everyone i’ve met in the past and every soul i’m about to meet in the future
happy memorable and spanking new year!
no matter how busy we are celebrating the new year partying with friends or with loved ones,
do take a few mins to smile and reflect on all that’s happened in the past year and how we want it to be in the coming year
then greet the new year with a smile so that every thing in the coming year will be dealt and felt with a smile no matter how terrible or hopeless the situation may be…

the Cambodian Project!

the Cambodian Project was conceived when i was in Siem Reap
when i was there, however short my trip was, what i saw changed my perspectives
they are so poor, yet happy and contented!
which is a rare occurance in big cities, contentment..

anyhow, this project is my baby
and i’d love for it to work out
but in order for that to happen, i’d need as much help as i can get!
below are some information about what we currently have and what we’re striving to achieve

the general idea is:

1. we’ll be running a few collection drives here in kl or around Malaysia
2. the collections would include clothings (new, hand-me-downs but not too shabby for ages 2 – 18 preferably 2-5 year olds ), stationaries fit for children in kindergarten, primary and secondary schools and medical supplies
3. during the 3rd and 4th week of November, whoever who’d be interested to go would go and personally hand the clothings, stationaries and medical supplies to the people there
4. targeted area, Siem Reap and the rural areas in northewestern Cambodia

also, there are talks of organizing charity basketball tournaments as fundraisers where the money would either go to food, and/or medical supplies or straight to a particular children’s hospital.
these tournaments are slated to materialize in Singapore and also in KL.

For those who are interested in helping out but not physically going over to Cambodia, these are the few things that I’ll be needing help with:
1. a core group of dedicated, reliable and passionate people with ideas
2. people to help with the collection drives
3. people to help with promotion of the collection drives
4. people to help with sponsorships
5. contacts! (very the important.. haha)
6. people to help with logistics
7. publicity
8. volunteers where needed
actually, anyone who is interested in any way, it’ll be good to hear from you

i was SO DAMN excited!
only reason being that kenny was one of em…
so was brian and dom and a few others
but i went there supporting kenny and brian
oh and cos rashid was the MC again for the 4th time hahaha

u should have heard the screaming!
my throat’s still sore from all that screaming!

this time round i couldnt take that many pictures of the games and the dances that they had
was sitting a little too far behind
but it was a pretty good spot if u ask me
ten time better then being all the way in front and only being able to look up at them whilst being pushed around by all the other ppl

kenny didnt end  up winning any of ’em titles
but if u’ve noticed, it was all bias already
still, kenny did well
and we’re all damn proud of him!
and he’s such a cutie i tell u!

when they announced that he’s this year’s winner, i stopped, stared, then started screaming!

before heading to zouk, i dropped by palate palatte
they were screening this movie called ‘I Know I’m Not Alone’
its by this musician called Michael Franti.
He went to the war torn countries with a crew of about 5 people to document how music can cross borders to change lives.

i personally love what he did.
some may just brush him off by saying that a lot of people can achieve what he has achieved,

the oddest shoot i’ve ever been to

june from jun’s talent text me rather last minute to see whether i was free for a shoot or not.
and i promised her i would help her out.
but little did i know what was installed for us.

we were to gather at pavilion at 5a.m.
since it was so early in the morning, i decided to for-go sleep
and when i got there, i was the first to climb into the van that was waiting for us there
another 2 chinese girls got onto the van and one of em stared at me.
and suddenly she asked me “u are christy right?”
and i went like “errrrrhhhh…… yeeeeeaaaaaaahhhh…”
so that was the start to a whole load of words being exchanged.
we were talking and talking and talking that june actually thought we knew each other prior to the shoot!
(turns out she acted in Emperor with adrian, aliff and crystal)

anyhow, when we got to putrajaya, we were left to makan.
and gosh!
they treated us like dirt!
US as in the LOCALS.
there were a whole load of foreign models there
and a lot of local chinese models as well.
i really dont care how they treat me cos i was lacking sleep so i couldnt care less
but i felt bad for the rest of the girls who wanted to much to be in ads
i mean, they really treat the local models like dirt!
not only are they paying so little, they also are more rude towards the chinese girls.
and when they speak to the foreign models, they are super polite.
like HELO~ havent u looked in the mirror recently? do u SEE the similarities?
oh but i guess not.
oh well.

i remembered the date
the fateful 13th of march 08
eddy told me about a month before that he was to perform at laundry with his band mates
and since i liked his brand of music, i decided to make the effort to go
(see! the things i do for u! bluek~!)

needless to say, i’m very proud of him!

(omg i sound like his mom… jeez)

one in a million

i’m watching it at home
was suppose to go watch it live with bhavesh
but initially i had percussion practice, which was canceled last min.
so i’m stuck at home and watching it on tv.

and the first thing that crossed my mind when the whole thing started was, WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH THEIR MAKE UP ARTIST AND FASHION SENSE?!?!?!?!?!
oh and also, why the HELL did u guys have to butcher ‘itu kamu’?! aiyo yo….. (kesian estranged.. andy, jangan marah~)
i mean, seriously, i’ve got nothing mean to comment about the two finalists’ voices cos i think they have the talent.
only thing that is lacking is probably more practice and more experience.

and now as i am blogging, i’m listening to Ayu sing
she’s got a strong, pwerful voice and i think she’s good, albeit some screaming
and maybe some technical problems here and there (cant blame me, i am classically trained. we pick up all the small details)
but she’s still a pretty good singer!

and as for Shila, she’s got the innocent softer version of Christina Aguilera’s voice
her lower notes she’s gotta be careful of
but her control in her high notes are amazingly good for a malaysian!
i love her voice.
sweet and straight forward

the only thing i’m really not satisfied about is their make up!
and the clothes!
i mean, COME ON!
not to say i had the best make up on tv last time but at least i’ve learnt from it and started applying the make up on myself!
and not to say i’ve got the best dress sense but OMG! i’ll NEVER be caught dead in anything that they’ve worn so far!
jeez, come on la!

the irony of this is that i was watching american idol right before one in a million
and of course the westerners have their power-house voices
but they too have their pitching problems
at least their dresseing sense, on an average, is a far cry better compared to the ones in OIAM!
damn… shy only wei….

and these few weeks watching all these great singers singing,
i am rekindled with the over-powering regret that i own a thin chinese voice
i absolutely LOVE to sing
and i can hold my tune and pitch
its just that i do not have the actual voice to compliment the tune
which is pretty sad for me

but i’ve got to give it to them
they have the courage to stand up there on that stage ALONE and belt out the songs that they are to sing!
i can never!
even with the dhol, even with the piano, i can never find the courage to do that alone
at least speaking aint that hard
but to parade your talent to the world, damn~
my hats off to them

… was a pretty interesting affair

and of course we were all in anticipation of the villa..
we were told to wait at cimb outside country heights cos our cars cannot enter
and the houses there were HUGE!
they had nice vast land to frolic around..
cars so berlambak that it overflows to outside..
these ppl really know how to live in luxury

so u can imagine just how excited we were when we saw those houses.
we thought we’d get to stay in one as nice as that

but no…
ours is a small Israel-jesus’s-time like apartment.
its pretty cosy i must admit
and for me, even though i want to own my own big house one day (with my own hard earned money, mind u)
for now, a small apartment thats cosy and warm is a more inviting idea

the only thing thats not ideal about the place is that the walls are pretty thin
so whatever soft noise that we make in the apartment can be heard next door!
so naturally, when u put such noisy bunch together, we get a whole crap shit load of complains as well!
whoopie!
very the normal..
i kinda think it’ll be odd if there aint complains.
would mean that we’re a dead boring bunch.
besides, me one person can probably wake the whole neighbourhood!
